Planting for the future  by Ayla Miller

The planting of a targeted 16,000 trees in a major project to protect and preserve the waters of the Kaipara harbour gained new impetus with a recent celebrity arrival to the district pitching in to help.

New Kaipara resident, media personality Paul Henry, by his own admission a man known for being ‘mean when he is hungry’ also sweetened up his new neighbours during a planting day with Otamatea HarbourCare last Saturday. He joined a group of around 24 community members as they planted 2,050 trees on the Cocking’s farm in Whakapirau and dished out chocolate bars to volunteers. “I get paid to do a lot of things which have an immediate impact but a short shelf life,” Mr Henry said. “What we are doing today is much more about the long term — we could be speeding up the restoration process by 200 years.” HarbourCare secretary and organiser, Mark Vincent, said a total of 4,150 trees were planted last week during four working bees. “This almost completes the community planting projects for the year. We have a couple more smaller jobs to finish off before the season ends but they are relatively small scale. “Altogether this season we have planted 15,350 trees and hope to reach our target of 16,000 by September.” Mr Vincent said inviting Mr Henry to join in was part of his aim to provide an enjoyable and memorable experience for people taking part in the planting project. “For me a really important dimension to this whole business is the community

and social aspect because there are new people coming into the area all the time and this is a good way to ease them into the community. “It was an opportunity for people to make new connections and to catch up with friends. “I was also keen for Paul to see what a rural community can be like and how people, out of a sense of community, will take the time out of their day to get involved.” Last week’s planting days included one at the Lupton property

where 750 trees were planted on Monday. This was followed by one at the Cullen’s dairy farm which was attended by 27 staff from Fonterra, who saw 850 new trees planted alongside a waterway. A third day was held at Rae and Rex Roadley’s property at Batley where a group of eight people from UDC Finance helped out. Mr Vincent says he is looking forward to continuing this work next year when the group intend to increase the scale of the planting operation.

 Every Tuesday night the sounds of the Dargaville Ukulele Group float down the main street thanks to the town’s newest orchestra. Organiser Mick Richards says he was inspired to start the group when he realised there were a number of ukulele players with no one to practise or perform with. The orchestra has around 20 musicians currently and are looking for more to join. The ensemble is directed by Kerri Russell and practise every Tuesday from 6pm at 64 Victoria Street in Cicada music store. It is hoped they will perform at community events in the near future.

In a response being described as ‘humbling’ by Greenways Trust staff, worker Katy McAteer’s dream to experience a helicopter ride is one step closer. Communities working together  by Ann Morgan

The Tomarata and Wellsford communities are working together to upgrade the Tomarata Playcentre -— repairing, replacing and redesigning the play area. “On a recent visit from our North Shore Playcentre Association support team, our centre was advised that due to many hours of use over the years, the playground needed replacement,” said Playcentre public relations Talia Watson-Walker. “This would ensure the ongoing enjoyment, learning and safety for our children. Our centre was advised that if these issues weren’t rectified by  Tomarata playcentre children enjoy playing outdoors term three we would have to close those particular aspects of the playground. “We are all farming families and very busy and didn’t know how we were going to get it done but our community got together and we have been doing the work in stages.” The centre received a grant to replace the bark and the farmer next door bought the old bark helping to fund the project. “The area is an open slate now. We want to make it really amazing for the children including a garden and a mud kitchen where they can mix and make things. It’s more natural for them and they love being outdoors. “We would like to say thank you to everyone who is supporting us. We have had a retaining wall built, the old playground removed, a digger and building materials supplied, and people have worked hard to help. “We have such an amazing community and very much appreciate the help. Our playcentre is a real family place and this really works for the new farming mums to be able to socialise and have support.” 

Wild West accolades  by Ann Morgan

Kaipara resident Katie Le Noel recently entered her Wild West Worcester Sauce into the World Hot Sauce, BBQ and Extreme Foods competition in America. She placed third in the Hot Sauce competition for her Sweet Black Pepper sauce and third also in the Hot Sauce Label section for her Ghost Pepper sauce. Katie has been selling her secret recipe sauces and chutneys which she makes in Dargaville since the end of 2014. “A few of my clients said they think my hot sauce is the best they have ever tasted and recommended I enter the competition, so I  Katie Le Noel with her winning Wild West Worcester sauce entered two sauces,” says Katie. To her delight the sauces both won bronze awards. “It was an opportunity that happened and then I forgot about it. One day I received a text from a client saying good luck today and I thought what for, and suddenly I had placed in the awards.” There were hundreds of entries from 14 countries and 34 American states and placing in two categories has done the Kaipara resident proud. “It was hard to know which category to enter so I took a gamble and picked the hot sauce category and the label design.” Katie says the label was created by a friend, Dennis O’Keefe, through his business MasFx design. “Other Kiwis did well too. It is nice to see New Zealanders winning in such competitions and I am proud to see my little sauce business getting recognition.” Katie is in the process of improving her facilities for her Wild West Worcester business and the manufacturing of her products. Her newest idea of sauce sachets will soon be available in stores across the country and she has now entered another competition with her sauces that clients recommended she enter. 

Another busy month Even though we have had rain, strong winds and frosts, it has been a good winter for last year’s chicks. We are still receiving native pigeons and harrier hawks. It’s a mix of young and old so this is a bit odd for this time of the year. I feel it’s something to do with the food chain. Last week we had a first at the Northpower Native Bird Recovery Centre when a young barn owl was brought in by two Fulton Hogan Northland workers. A big thanks to these guys for helping an injured bird. Finding a young one on the way to Dargaville just shows that there must be more in the area. We went to the area to take a GPS reading which can be recorded. It looked like it had been struck by a car and sadly it died two days later. If it had not been found we would never have known that they were so close to Whangarei. The feathers were very soft around its face but one thing that stood out was its big talons. Thank goodness it was very calm because of the injuries as I think they could have penetrated my gloves without any trouble. If anyone sees something strange please let us know as this is how we can build up records and learn more about the birds. A few years ago I got a call about a bat not far from the Centre. I recorded the GPS location and passed the information on to the Department of Conservation. Richard Parris, who worked for DOC at the time, was thrilled as there were no reports of bats in this area. So any report from the public is how we can all learn just what is in our area. The kiwi that lost a toe in a gin trap last month is just about ready for release. The last Kiwi we had like this was called two toes when it was released. DOC had been monitoring it and found it happily producing kiwi chicks. It has now had its monitor removed and is on its own. It’s good to know how some of our recovered birds get on once released back into the wild. Some birds have nasty injuries when brought in and require all sorts of repair work, like inserting pins to broken bones until they are ready for release. It just shows that with our help we can assist many native birds returning to the wild. I don’t know what is going on with the wild ducks this year. We started seeing ducklings at shooting season and a wild duck that makes its nest in our compound at the Centre each year is sitting on 12 eggs at this time. I can remember in the past you would see ducklings about November but now it seems like all year round. The wandering albatross that was released stayed on the water for a few hours and then flew away – no doubt he is many miles away now.

Celebrating gardening pleasures  by Ann Morgan

The Kaiwaka Garden and Floral Club is celebrating it’s 50th anniversary next month with a high tea with past and present members. “The club was really big in Kaiwaka in its heyday, mostly with farmers wives who had very extensive vegetable and flower gardens,” said club president Rosemary Browne. “Times have changed over the years. We used to meet at different houses but there are too many of us now. There are 35 members and we meet at the Anglican Church hall in Mangawhai.” This is central for those who come from the different areas like Waipu and Mangawhai to Kaiwaka. “We have contacted 50 past members to attend the anniversary, and are having a high tea and will be talking about the history of the club. It will be nice to spend time with present and past members, chatting about gardening days gone bye and what went on 50-years-ago compared to now.” The group meet monthly and have guest speakers and demonstrations on floral arranging or gardening matters. “Last month someone spoke about creating hanging baskets. We have done various things over the years and at Christmas we put together flower posies and Christmas cookies and deliver them to the local senior citizen’s village.

“Our members range in age from 50-years-old up into the 80s. We have a lot of fun — we arrange rambles of members’ gardens and go on trips. Earlier this year we went to the Auckland Botanical Gardens. “We like to encourage people to learn how to do floral arrangements. New faces at Kumarani The art of cheese  by Ayla Miller

Circus Kumarani have two new tutors involved with their OSCAR after school care programme.

Maria and Ad Clarijs emigrated from the Netherlands in 1983 and started the Kaiwaka Cheese Shop in 1986 after moving to the area from Blenheim for a sustainable lifestyle.

Georgina Whaley has recently joined the team, taking care of children in their after school care programme. She moved to Dargaville a year ago from New South Wales, Australia, with her family and has always been interested in gymnastics and circus. “We teach the kids trapeze, silks, juggling, and also do normal after school activities where we sit in a circle and talk about our day,” she says. “It is good for the kids to have that social interaction with each other and they become quite a close group.” Community circus teacher Abbe Clark runs the youth classes in Whangarei as well as helping Georgina with the OSCAR programme in Dargaville. “It is

“I have more than 15 years experience making cheese. We made our own cheese and created a chain of Dutch stores in New Zealand and started importing from the Netherlands to stock our stores. We had five stores in total,” said Ad. “We sold the stores in 2000 and the shop in Kaiwaka still lives on. Not bad after 30 years — especially when a local told me in 1986 that nobody could make a living in that building.” Ad says he has always made cheese for his family, even after selling the business, and then Maria suggested he start cheesemaking workshops to share his knowledge with others. It is an art form and there is also the fitness side of things. “It assists the children with their hand eye coordination and with using both sides of the brain. “We have an anti bullying stance so they learn how to interact in a safe environment. The programme is peer support focussed and the older children are willing to share skills with the younger ones and offer encouragement.” The OSCAR after school care programme runs from 3–5pm five days a week during the school term for children of primary school and intermediate age. 

LOCAL BODY ELECTIONS

Planning for the future Otamatea Ward candidate As a mother, Karen Joyce-Paki has a personal interest in the success of the Kaipara, which has motivated her to put her name forward as a councillor for the Dargaville ward in the local elections. Mrs Joyce-Paki was born in Te Kopuru and has lived in Dargaville most of her life. She whakapapas to Ngapuhi, Ngati Whatua and Te Uri o Hau and is married to local police officer, William Paki. Between them they have five children. “It is important that our children grow up in a safe environment and are not disadvantaged by living in a small rural community. They deserve to have the same opportunities and resources that kids in similar towns have,” she says. Mrs Joyce-Paki moved away briefly to work in Auckland and the North Shore council returning home in 2002 to care for her father. She then took up a role at the Ministry of Justice before moving into her current role as community engagement officer at the Kauri Coast branch of the Department of Conservation. “I want to focus on strengthening community relationships through honest and transparent communication. I also want to bring some cultural diversity to the council,” she says. If elected she aims keep the council honest and accountable to incentives that help youth, protect and enhance the communities’ living and recreational environment for future generations. She believes involving youth in programmes that lead to greater connection with their local communities

will lead to overall brighter futures. “I balance my time between whanau, work and supporting our community as Justice of the Peace and marriage celebrant.” Sustainable environmental management is another area that is important to her and says she wants to work on improving recreational access to parks and reserves whilst protecting land for future generations. 

Daffodil day is about Cancer awareness and research but this day is not just about daffodils. It is about caring for people and organisations such as Hospice who are often very integral in caring for those with cancer and other illnesses. Hospice charity shops are a way that the organisation helps fund needs the organisation may have such as providing extra equipment for clients that ministry funding does not allow for. There are two Hospice shops in the Kaipara, one in Wellsford and one in Dargaville and more than 100 stores across the country. These second-hand shops are run by volunteers and they rely on donations of good quality goods including furniture, clothing and household items. Volunteer staff have to sort through everything that is donated so please ensure it is

useable. Volunteers say being involved is very rewarding and a great way to help others. Hospice care and support is provided free of charge and has a unique whole person approach — which means physical, spiritual, emotional and social needs are equally important. Hospice help anyone with a life limiting disease to make the most of their lives — to live every moment in whatever way is important to them. They are here to help give the person the opportunity to live every moment to the best of their abilities. Anyone living with a life limiting condition such as heart failure, motor neurone disease, MS or cancer can access and benefit from hospice services.

Cars rally for cancer  by Ayla Miller

dargaville@laserelectrical.co.nz

A convoy of classic cars, sports cars, hot rods and motorcycles will travel from Whangarei to Dargaville on Sunday, August 28 to raise money for the Cancer Society during the Classic and Sports Car Club Inc annual Daffodil Car and Motorcycle Rally. Northland club president and rally organiser Phil Schultz says the club chose to support the Cancer Society as they believe it is a good cause. “Everyone has got someone in their family, or friends who have been affected by cancer and the money raised by this rally goes towards helping cancer patients,” he says. “Last year we had approximately 80 cars and motorcycles and we raised an excess of $1,200. This year we want to beat that.” The convoy will depart from Whangarei’s Kensington car park at 10am and will travel along State Highway 14 to the Dargaville Warehouse and Countdown car park on Victoria Street around 11am. There will be no entry charge but viewers will be asked to make a small donation for the Cancer Society. The vehicles will be on display there until 12 noon when they will move to the Kaipara Vintage Machinery Club at Harding Park for lunch and the prizegiving. People visiting the Vintage Machinery Museum will be charged the usual $10 entry fee but $5 of this will be donated back to the Cancer Society. “We will be having several raffles and there will be a lot of spot prizes donated by Whangarei businesses. Mangawhai Causeway Church, originally known as Mangawhai Interdenominational church, is a hidden treasure for young and old in the community and has been operating since 1907. “We used to meet at the little church opposite Bennetts Chocolate factory. The church grew so we moved to the Mangawhai Recreation Centre,” said children’s Pastor Jan Chambers. “We rebranded and became Causeway Church. The point behind the name is because you have to cross the causeway to get into Mangawhai and Jesus came for the cause of mankind.” On Sundays the children get bussed to the little original church for their programme or to the school depending on the age group. The youth programme, Fuel, is held on Friday nights for year nine and upwards at the little church on the corner of Leslie and Moir St. “At the moment children are learning about the virtue of obedience and the little ones are learning about making good choices and listening to mummy and daddy and what they are asked to do,” said Pastor Chambers. Causeway also runs a programme called CAP — Christians Against Poverty.

 Causeway Church in Mangawhai provide activities for all age groups in the community

“Everyone is welcome to come along — it is budgeting advice, and we believe people can learn not to spend more than they earn. The church is also used for Alcoholics Anonymous and marriage courses. “We have groups happening for all ages for people to socialise and get support from others including the Iron Men group for men.

“We want to be community minded and help where we can. That is our whole focus. Anyone can drop in and see us or see what programmes we have happening or they can call the office on 09 431 4782.” At present the church is in the process of planning their future building which will cater for many community based events. 

For approximately 30-years Mangawhai Probus has been active in the community, providing a monthly gathering with guest speakers or outings for members to participate in. “We have approximately 60 members. It is a combined men’s and women’s club — most people are retired, and we have a lot of ex-business people attend,” said president Jim Wintle. “I joined 8–10 years ago. It is a great club and coming along helps people get out of their comfort zones and we have guest speakers on all sorts of interesting topics. Often members say to me they have spoken with people they have never met before.” The most recent guest speaker was in the 1964 Olympics. “He ended up following the Olympic movement and became chef de mission. He had a slideshow presentation and it was a very interesting talk. Each month we have a local speaker as well.” The group go on two bus trips a year and have a mid-winter Christmas and a Christmas event. “Sometimes we do local things and sometimes we travel out of town. We are always looking for something different to do. “People who attend appreciate the social support and our network ensures people are kept in touch with and are ok to get to the events,” said Mr Wintle.

Farm profits action plan  by Paul Campbell

Kaipara farmers are being invited to join in a new farming initiative dubbed Extension 350 and a New Zealand first, currently undergoing a funding process though Northland Inc.

 Bill Shepherd NRC Chairman, Nathan Guy Minister of Primary Industries, David Wilson CEO Northland Inc and Chris Neill Dairy NZ

Alison Whiteford of Beef and Lamb NZ says the project aligns with their mantra of ‘by farmers, for farmers’. “The project will engage skilled and profitable farmers with their peers who are eager to enhance their farm systems.” Chris Neill of DairyNZ added: “Extension 350 is the next step of scaling up farmer driven initiatives to a large number of Northland farmers.

We anticipate this programme will make a significant contribution to growing Northland’s economy.” Northland Inc chief executive David Wilson said: “Extension 350 is a priority project in the Tai Tokerau Northland Economic Action Plan and we believe it has the potential to change the way we farm by giving more farmers the tools and profitability to embed sustainable practices in their farm systems.” 

The project will include 350 Northland farms and is modelled on having clusters of five farms working together with business advice and direction provided to a Target Farmer by an expert consultant, with that relationship encouraged by a Mentor Farmer. The expectation is that the Target Farmer similarly influences a group of Associated Farmers. The pilot scheme which ran at Candy Farm in Okaihau from 2011 to 2014 saw local farmers Alister and Lyn Candy make management changes which have resulted in greater resilience and an increase in profits of around $180,000 per annum. Extension 350 chairman, Ken Hames, is highly enthusiastic about the initiative’s potential. “This is a fantastic opportunity for Beef and Lamb, DairyNZ, Northland Inc and the Ministry of Primary Industries to work together to improve the region’s economy,” he said. “Extension 350 has the ability to enhance farm systems to improve the profitability of the farms involved. For the farmer — profitability equals choices — such as the flexibility to make decisions about future on-farm improvements, repaying debt or improving livelihood.”

1 year today

Left us 20 August 2012 after 72 years of a very full life.

17th August 2016

Dearly loved sister and sister in-law of Keith and Linda Morgan. Treasured Aunt of Tracy & Kerry, Kylie & Brad, great Aunt to Matty & Will. Forever in our hearts!

To have you home with me would be my dearest wish, but I will not wake you to suffer again. One day we will meet again on the blue bayou, never to part.

On the 11th of August 2016, at home, slipped peacefully away from this life. Dearly loved husband of Elizabeth; father to Mark and Graham; close friend to Rosalee. A private service for Peter was held according to his wishes.

Fly high Peter.

We miss you heaps!

Love you always, forgetting you never.

Lou, our siblings and in laws, grandchildren and great grands. RIP Dad

Peter Graham Butcher

You live on in our memories.

Losing you dad was the hardest day of my life. I miss you walking past with rucks, leaning on my fence to have our little chats and then off you go in the distance I would whisper love you dad. I miss you heaps always in my heart. Your big girl Diane
